*****As I recap these games, I'm going to steal hockey's "3 Stars of the night" thing, except I'll do it for each team. Each award will be decided by the committee (of one).
IPFW 83 UNO 72
First Division 1 game on the road was a tough one. We were rushed early and had some shots go in and out as the 'Dons built 9-0 and 14-2 leads. After settling down a little bit, we got the game back to three points late in the first half before a late run gave IPFW a ten point halftime lead. The second half was a half of runs, as the 'Dons pushed the lead up to as much as 20 points before we got it back to 8. They made enough plays at the end to come away with the win. IPFW guard Frank Gaines is an absolute beast and is by far the best player we've seen so far in four games.

UNO 100 Concordia 66
We got off to a ridiculously hot start in this game, building a big lead early in the first half before a late run by Concordia cut the lead to 14 at the break. But we came out guns blazing in the second half, outscoring the Concordians, maybe accordians? (I have no clue what their nickname is) 56-38, hitting the triple digits when Tyler Egli came off Twist-2 firing and drilled the 3.
Concordia 3 Stars:
3rd Star: Beau Smith 15 points, 4 rebounds
2nd Star: Joel Haywood 15 points, 3 rebounds
1st Star: Porter Birtell 14 points, 11 rebounds incl. 1 Tip Dunk on @JKarhoff45's head.
UNO 3 Stars:
3rd Star: John Karhoff 15 points, 3 rebounds, 6-7 FG
2nd Star: Caleb Steffensmeier 12 points, 4 assists, 4 steals 4-4 3FG
1st Star: Mitch Albers 30 points, 7 assists, 12-13 FG
UMKC 77 UNO 74
This was such a great game to play in as well as watch. Due to the ridiculously soft rims in UMKC's Rec Center, a lot of shots fell that probably shouldn't have, and defensive stops weren't exactly at a premium. Mitch really carried us in the first half, tallying 18 first half points while getting to the rim and to the line at will. The only negative thing is that when UMKC really started gunning for him in the second half, we struggled to always get good shots if Mitch wasn't getting in the lane. As previously mentioned, sharpshooter Reggie Chamberlain knocked down a big shot at the end and we weren't able to get a clear look as time expired.
UMKC 3 Stars
3rd Star: Kirk Korver 8 points, 3 rebounds 2-5 3FG
2nd Star: Trinity Hall 11 points, 9 rebounds
1st Star: Reggie Chamberlain 28 points 5-10 3FG
UNO 3 Stars
3rd Star: CJ Carter 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals
2nd Star: John Karhoff 18 points (Career High), 5 rebounds, 2 assists
1st Star: Mitch Albers 26 points, 5 assists 8-9 FT
South Dakota 83 UNO 81
This was another heartbreaking loss as we fell, maybe undeservingly, to the Coyotes at the Dome earlier today. USD guard Louie Krogman was red hot early, attaining all 16 of his points in the opening frame. Charlie Westbrook, who happens to have that Hooked on Phonics bounce, had one of the sickest in game dunks I've witnessed in person in the first half. Kar also got yammed on again so hes up to 2 on the year. Down by 8 at the half, both teams came out red hot to start the second half. We started 8-9 and cut the lead to 1 at the first media timeout and the game stayed within 3-4 points the rest of the way. John Karhoff and Alex Welhouse really dominated inside and out in the second half, combining for 25 points in the second stanza alone. With around 3 mins left while we were holding onto a one point lead, USD Center Trevor Gruis blatantly traveled on his Heather Pohl move and wasn't called for it, which sucked. We ended up losing by two, not sayin', just sayin'. But I will hand it to Gruisy (Grease-y), which is definitely his nickname, knocked down both his free throws after he was "fouled" by Caleb. CJ got a great look at the rim with about 2 seconds left but Anderson Varejao blocked it and that was the game. Fuckers.
USD 3 Stars
3rd Star: Louie Krogman 16 points, 3 assists, 4-10 3FG
2nd Star: Charlie Westbrook 15 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and the aforementioned freaked dunk.
1st Star: Trevor Gruis 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks
UNO 3 Stars
3rd Star: CJ Carter 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists
2nd Star: Mitch Albers 23 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds*
1st Star: Alex Welhouse 19 points, 7 rebounds
*Probably could have given the 1st Star to Mitch, but I was sick of it.
Season Notes
- I have played poorly so far, I don't want to talk about it either.
- Mitch (23.5 PPG, Good for Top 10 in D-1) is just 1-12 from 3 this year. Shows how much his game has evolved from last year. He's also averaging over 5 assists a game, which illustrates how much he is creating for others as well as himself.
- John Karhoff should stop trying to block tip dunks.
- Bill and CJ each have like 4 breakaway layups, although each claim to be accomplished dunkers.
- Welly is the new Torrian, which means he tries to steal rebounds from everyone else, and gets super salty when he doesn't get his way on the glass.
- Jacques makes layups way harder than they need to be.
- Eggs never showers.
- Hags fantasy team sucks this year, which is awesome.
Proud to be an American, but even prouder to be a Maverick,
John Ring
